Getting file size for sequential storage

I'm writing a program to simulate a file storage. Suppose I use sequential file storage. My question is this. Would I need to obtain the file size of the file before store. I'm guessing this is the case as I need to find a series of blocks large enough for the file. I was wondering if I could get a bit of insight. I know this question may seem pretty obvious.
