Exchanging data between two C++ codes one runs on ubuntu and another on windows

I need to have a communication channel between Ubuntu(14.04) and Windows(7) to exchange data realtime between two C++ codes. The windows can be installed as a virtual machine or it can be another PC. The type of the data is double.

Does anyone have any idea?
